Transferring vehicle ownership (balik nama)

Balik nama is the process of changing the registered keeper on the STNK and BPKB to the buyer. Until it is done, the vehicle is still registered to the seller — which matters for tax notices, for enforcement, and for your ability to sell it on cleanly.

Requirements are set locally, so confirm with the relevant office before you travel.

• Original STNK and BPKB.
• The purchase receipt or transfer document, signed by both parties.
• Identification for the buyer, and a copy of the seller's identification.
• The vehicle itself for a physical inspection of engine and chassis numbers.

Doing it at the point of sale is far easier than doing it later, because you still have access to the seller. Fees vary with the vehicle's assessed value and any outstanding tax, so budget for the tax position you inherited.

A vehicle registered outside Bali needs its file moved before the local transfer, which adds time. Factor that in when comparing an out-of-region bargain against a locally registered vehicle.
