Plates, tax and salt air

A vehicle registered outside Bali (a non-DK plate) is cheaper and harder to sell on, and transferring the registration takes time and money. The registration region is on every card for that reason.

Road tax validity is shown as a date, not a yes/no. An expired STNK is a cost and an administrative job, and it is one of the most common reasons a “bargain” is not one.

  • Coastal humidity and salt attack undersides and electrics — inspect the chassis, not just the paint.
  • Ask for the BPKB (ownership book) and check the engine and chassis numbers against it in person.
  • Filter for inspection available if you want a third party to look before you commit.

Dealers and private sellers

Dealer listings tend to carry service history, a warranty position and a trade-in option. Private listings are usually cheaper and give you the previous owner to ask questions of. Both are on the same page; the seller-type filter separates them.

Rental stock is listed separately from sale stock. If you only need a vehicle for a few months, renting is normally cheaper than buying and reselling.

Before money changes hands

Meet at the address on the registration where you can. Check that the seller name matches the BPKB, that the numbers match the vehicle, and that there is no outstanding finance.

For anything expensive, an independent inspection is worth its cost. A pre-purchase check finds accident repair and flood damage that a test ride will not.
