Cookie policy

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep. On your next visit the browser hands it back, which is how a site remembers that you are signed in or that you prefer prices in Australian dollars.

This policy also covers two similar technologies: local storage, which holds slightly larger values in the browser and is what we use for saved comparisons and recently viewed listings, and pixels, which are one-pixel images used to count whether an email was opened.

These make the site function. They cannot be switched off from within Pasaran, because without them you could not sign in, keep a session open or complete a checkout safely.

• pasaran.session — keeps you signed in. Expires when you close the browser, or after 30 days if you chose to stay signed in.
• pasaran.csrf — protects forms against cross-site request forgery. Session only.
• pasaran.device — identifies a trusted device for two-step verification. 30 days.
• pasaran.consent — remembers your cookie choices so we do not ask again. 12 months.

These remember decisions you have already made so the site does not reset itself between visits. They hold settings, not identity.

• pasaran.preferences — display currency, language and your default area. 12 months.
• pasaran.collection — saved comparisons and recently viewed listings, held in local storage on your device.
• pasaran.layout — whether you last used grid, list or map on search results. 6 months.

Analytics tells us which parts of Pasaran work and which do not — how often a search returns nothing, where people abandon the listing form, which filters nobody touches. It is set only if you accept it.

We use a first-party analytics service configured to truncate IP addresses before storage. It does not follow you to other websites and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.

• pasaran.analytics_id — a random identifier that groups events into one visit. 13 months.
• pasaran.session_seq — counts pages within a single visit so funnels can be measured. Session only.

If you accept marketing cookies, we can tell whether an advertisement led to a visit, and avoid showing you a campaign you have already responded to. If you decline, you will still see advertising elsewhere on the internet — it simply will not be informed by your Pasaran activity.

Email pixels tell us whether a newsletter was opened. Turning images off in your mail client prevents this, and unsubscribing stops the emails altogether.

A few features are provided by third parties that set their own cookies when the feature loads. Map tiles on search and area pages come from a mapping provider; payment pages during checkout are served by our payment partner; embedded video in area guides comes from a video host.

These are loaded only when the feature is used, and each provider publishes its own cookie notice. Declining non-essential cookies here does not remove the strictly necessary cookies those providers need to render their own service securely.

The banner shown on your first visit lets you accept everything, reject everything non-essential, or choose category by category. The choice is stored for twelve months and can be changed at any time from the cookie settings link in the site footer.

You can also control cookies in your browser: every major browser can block third-party cookies, clear cookies on exit, or refuse them entirely. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will stop you from signing in, so most people block third-party cookies only.

We honour the Global Privacy Control signal. If your browser sends it, non-essential cookies are treated as declined without you having to interact with the banner.

Beyond Global Privacy Control, there is no agreed standard for the older Do Not Track header, so we do not rely on it. Our default position is that nothing outside the strictly necessary group runs until you have made a choice.

When we add or remove a cookie we update the tables above and change the date at the top. If a new category is introduced, the banner reappears so you can decide about it before it is used.
