Children’s equipment is the one category where second-hand needs a hard rule: buy on the safety standard, not on how it looks. Car seats should carry a visible certification mark — ECE R44/04, R129 i-Size or the equivalent — and they expire. The plastic degrades under UV whether or not the seat has been used, and a seat over about six years old, or one that has been in any collision at all, should not be bought at any price.

Cots, strollers and carriers are more forgiving but still worth checking against recall notices, which manufacturers publish by model and batch. Look for the model number on the frame, search it before you travel, and confirm the seller has every component — a stroller missing its adapter or a cot missing two slats is not a bargain.

The good news is that Bali families cycle through this gear constantly and much of it is barely used, because children outgrow equipment far faster than the equipment wears out. Prams that saw six months of use are common, and priced as if they saw six years.
